Japanese chewing gum wrappers, Little Golden Books, and 50’s advertising art all help fuel Joe Newton’s illustration and painting. Like the best children’s books the first hit is playful and sweet, but underneath lurks a darker and more complicated adult world. The primary venue for his illustration the past seven years has been the Savage Love advice column, for which he has created nearly 400 of these sweet/sad images.
Both artist and art director Joe has worked both sides of the table. As an art director he has assigned hundreds of illustrations for Rolling Stone and Seattle’s The Stranger. As an illustrator his work has appeared in publications like the New York Times, Vibe and Nickelodeon magazine, and for clients like Sony Music and Publicis. His illustrations have been honored by American Illustration, Communications Arts, and Print magazine.
As a designer Joe has created hundreds of magazine and book covers, feature designs, posters, and cd covers. His design work for The Stranger has been recognized by the Society of Publication Designers, and the Society of Illustrators awarded him a silver medal for his art direction of an illustration by Nathan Fox for Rolling Stone.
As painter, Joe has participated in numerous shows including three solo shows at the renowned Roq la Rue gallery in Seattle. His paintings typically evoke the same wry humor as his illustration work, offering a sly joke, a visual pun, or Joe's own subtle commentary about the world around us.
Joe Newton is an artist, graphic designer and art director residing in Brooklyn, NY, and is currently the Head of Type Collections for Veer.
